gaslight coffee roasters.

for someone who is notoriously coffee-phobic (me), a trip to gaslight coffee roasters might seem a bit questionable. but it was time to chaperone an outing for le bébé & his girlfriend, so off to logan square we went for a mommy & baby date.

our friends are kind of gaslight local celebrities. (they go often & the staff all know them!) ... which is why when i was promised the absolute best avocado toast, i knew i was in for a treat.

here's what i had ...

avocado toast :
with kale salad & roasted tomatoes.
i truly don't know how they did it, but this is legitimately the best avocado toast in the world. congrats, gaslight! you did it! but for real ... it's incredible. i think it's the caraway seed mixtures & roasted tomatoes that make it so amazing. plus it's on a bed of kale. what more can you ask for??

as such an avid avocado toast eater ... not sure what i'm going to do moving forward. nothing can compare to this work of culinary art. rest of the universe, you better step up your game. until then, i'll see you at gaslight ... erryday.

kitchen 17.

"a vegan cafe specializing in house-made seitan with american & middle eastern cuisine." upon reading that, you may be thinking to yourself, "how is it possible halley has not yet been to whatever fine establishment this is?"

well, that's because i'm an idiot, i guess. because kitchen 17 is the bomb.

finally, a couple weeks ago ... my favorite vegan, tnaya (hi, tnaya!), & i got around to going ... after planning for literally months on end.

here's what i had ...

traditional deep-dish pizza :
wednesdays are vegan deep dish pizza night. let me rephrase. legit vegan deep dish pizza night. with delicious chicago deep dish crust, vegan cheese, seitan, sauce on top, etc. etc. etc. all the qualities one might look for in chicago deep dish pizza can be found here.

glazed donut :
not the best donut i've had, but certainly not the worst. the issue may have been that i was overfilled on pizza & didn't have much room for this. oopsie.

it's usually at this point that i comment on whether or not i'd head back to said restaurant. in kitchen 17's case ... i've already been back. tnaya & i had dinner there last friday ... the star of the meal, you ask? the fast food burger ... basically a vegan big mac that i'm still thinking about. nom nom.

thanks to my new part-time work schedule, i'm able to take the little munchkin out to lunch & meet people during the week more often ... this happened a couple weeks ago with our friend, mavis. (hi, mavis!) since mavis lives just a bit west of us, we decided to pick somewhere in the middle ... enter dinkel's.

about dinkel's : "through the years & now four generations, many things have remained the same: the standard of quality workmanship, original recipes & the delicious taste of our goods." sounds good, what else?

you may know dinkel's for their donuts. but about a year or so ago (i think?), they expanded & opened up a little cafe attached to their bakery. that's where we went.

here's what i had ...

the little brother :
spinach artichoke hummus, tomatoes, onions, arugula & artichokes
w/ a balsamic vinaigrette on six grain bread.
maybe a touch heavy on the arugula, but that's my problem. otherwise, this sandwich was perfect! spinach artichoke hummus needs to become a thing everywhere, because it's delicious. (in fact, i may have to make some at home ... hmm.)

what's so great about dinkel's cafe & this sandwich is that it's a permanent fixture on their menu ... meaning, you could walk in at anytime & get a super tasty vegan lunch! we can't partake in any donuts (yet! are you listening, dinkel's?), but a girl can dream, right?
