bánh mì báget.

last year, when anthony's closed ... things were bleak around here. (although, seeing as i was a huge pregnant lady throughout the super hot summer, it's probably best it wasn't available to me, as i would have gotten even huger.) anyway, soon after they closed, bánh mì báget moved into their space.

it took me this entire time to finally get over there & try some of their grub. since they are the "home of the vietnamese bánh mi sandwich," that's what i had to get.

here's what i had ...

lemongrass tofu banh mi :
cucumber, pickled carrots, cilantro, vegetarian soy sauce, jalapeño & lemongrass tofu on a fresh baked baguette.
guys. this was amazing. since i brought it home, i added some of my own vegan mayo ... which really took this from an a to an a+. 

tofu springrolls :
rice paper rolls stuffed with rice noodles, mint leaves, tofu, lettuce & bean sprouts & served with fresh peanut sauce.
here's where things derailed ... these springrolls were just a no. first off all, they were HUGE. this is a full size dinner plate. what?! second, they contained mushrooms. which were not listed as an ingredient ... and we know how i feel about mushrooms. they were also just generally not very good. luckily, the sandwich made up for it. 

besides upping their springroll game, the only thing that could make bánh mì báget better is if they offered a vegan pho. until then, they've got plenty of other vegan items on their menu i'm excited to try. i'll definitely be back.

sopraffina marketcaffe.

another lunchtime adventure to the loop for me & the chi city vegan baby ... this time, we tried sopraffina marketcaffe in the aon center.

josh frequents sopraffina regularly ... (so much so that "his" checkout lady was actually thrilled to meet me & the baby. which was lovely.) since i've been hearing about sopraffina forever ... it was really about time i visited for myself.

here's the about section : "when it comes to food, we do our best to buy fruits, meats & vegetables that have been raised locally using methods that are proven sustainable by independent third party certifiers. we're also reducing our impact on the environment with programs dedicated to reducing waste, decreasing energy & water consumption, eliminating toxic chemicals & pesticides & encouraging recycling & composting." doin' their part!

here's what i had ...


#9 venezia :
roasted tomatoes, zucchini, onions, arugula, hummus, balsamic glaze.
 (no portabella mushrooms.) 
a little messy, but quite yummy! i'm finding that sandwiches just don't really photograph very nicely. oh well.

the best thing about sopraffina is that all their vegan items are labeled vegan! i think i have a hatred for places in the loop, because generally they don't seem respectful of vegan needs ... but maybe i'm wrong! maybe places like sopraffina are changing things ... we shall see!

the goddess & grocer.

while holed up with a baby, some of my gal pals (hi, carly & joelle!) brought me some lunch one fine weekend day ... this time, from the goddess & grocer in the gold coast.

from the goddess & grocer facebook page, this spot is "where you will find ready-made & made to order sandwiches, salads, prepared foods, gourmet desserts, wine & beer among a variety of local, unique retail." sounds lovely.

here's what i had ...

garden goddess wrap :
avocado, cucumber, carrot, tomato, beets, spinach, lettuce & goddess dressing in a wheat wrap.
so fresh, so pretty, so delicious!
i also love the name ... us lady vegans kind of are garden goddesses, no? ha.

it kind of blows my mind that i had never eaten at the goddess & grocer before this ... but i do know now that i will for sure be back.

hannah's bretzel.

hannah's bretzel (the one i went to was on the pedway) has been on my list of weekday lunch places to try forever. but since i work in the west loop, far from any hannah's locations ... it took me being on maternity leave to make it over there. since josh works in the area, it was a perfect place for the chi city vegan baby & i to meet him for a mid-week lunch.

the mantra at hannah's bretzel is pretty straightforward : "our philosophy is simple... start with quality ingredients & follow with a conscience." thumbs up!

here's what i had ...

vegetable bomb :
sliced cucumbers, vine tomatoes, avocado, red onions, watercress & organic baby arugula drizzled with housemade dijon vinaigrette on organic whole grain baguette.
ok, it was a very windy day outside the aon center, so i had to take a quick snap, lest my sandwich break apart & blow away. so sorry this first post has a not so great photo. anyway, like i said, i had been wanting to try hannah's bretzel forever. did this 'wich meet my expectations? i'm going to say ... meh. it was good! but not like amazing.

but hey, it's a vegan option in the loop. we can't complain too much.

i'm baaaaaack. (kind of.)

guys, having a baby is hard work. for real. 

i guess that's why they make 'em so damn cute. 

exhibit a:

anywho ... the chi city vegan baby has been pretty mobile the past two & a half months, so we have gotten out for some grub. but you'll see ... it's mostly sandwiches. easy to eat with a baby strapped to your chest.

so get pumped! new posts coming!! not as frequent as before (i'm thinking one a week instead of two), but coming nonetheless!

missed you guys!
